Blog #4: Web Based Resources

I find that using the web to explore and reinforce my content is relatively easy and that web based resources are an integral part of the everyday needs of my students and my curriculum. My students love YouTube and we utilize it as a part of the content of one of our Channel 11 shows “School of Thought”. This show dedicates an entire segment to 4 or 5 videos based on that week’s theme and the kids get to pick the videos with an adult producer approval of course. As for my own resources, I use a couple of sites that help me create things for my students and allow me to collaborate with other educators. http://www.edutopia.org/ is a site that was recommended by my first administrator and has an array of useful reinforcements for the new teacher or the teacher looking to keep the classroom applicable to his generation of the student population. I use http://www.eschoolnews.com/ specifically for technological needs in my classroom an dlatest advancements for the classroom. I get a newsletter from http://www.einstruction.com/ and it is a good starting place when I am looking for information or additional resources in my classroom or my own learning outside of the classroom. I do believe I could go on and on for day on web based resources bu I will end with http://rubistar.4teachers.org/. I find that using rubrics with my students is the best way for them to know what they are getting into with my assignments and for me to accurately and fairly assess their work.

  1. Hello Jacki
I found your blog very interesting and information. Your website was very interesting to me, for my future students, I will be using them. Jackie, I found out that Web based resources for education is greatly helpful because they provide better experience for students and are perfectly tailored to suit their requirements. It is expected that these resources would play a critical role in the success of educational establishments in the future.

Also, online video lectures are the most preferred form of online educational resource. The collection of engineering based video resource named Stanford Engineering Everywhere offers useful information as well. Udemy covers a diverse range of topics and offers videos generated by users themselves. Students can also opt for Multimedia Education Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (admin, 2011).

Furthermore, I agree with you that using rubrics with my students is the best way for them to know what they are getting into with my assignments and for me to accurately and fairly assess their work. Thanks for sharing your information with the class.
    Blessings
    Eric

    1. Thanks Eric! I will have to check out your video site suggestions. I always like exemplars to show my kids when we are working on a variety of different videos. It's important that they see what others are doing or not doing that they may need to. I whole heartedly believe in rubrics. It just gets us all on the right page from the start and no surprises in the grading or expectations. Kids really do need the structure and it helps them know what goals they should be setting for themselves up front.

  2. Thanks for mentioning you-tube. I have to admit that you-tube is one of my favorites. Over the past two years that I have been in education, I have turned to you-tube a number of times when I just can’t get a point across with words. I feel like you-tube gets a bad wrap at times because not all of the material is time worthy. However, there are a number of videos that contain beneficial information. Of course, it’s very important that we keep our eyes open and review material and make sure that it is used for its intended purposes. Overall, I feel that you-tube is a great tool.

  3. YouTube gets such a bad wrap but like you said, if you just sort through it, you can really find some great, usable clips. It is like anything, you just need to take your time to find what works for your content area. No lesson is easy to put together. If you want to make the lesson engaging and valuable to the kids and utilize resources like YouTube, it will take time to put all the parts together so it makes sense for the whole class and the instructor.
